Insider's Guide To Hoboken, New Jersey

Hoboken, New Jersey, is a modern, bustling city in Hudson County and a part of the New York metropolitan area. With its breathtaking views of the Hudson River and the New York City skyline, Hoboken, NJ, has always been a popular place to live. And that popularity shows no signs of waning.

As a neighbor to the Big Apple, this city is viewed by many as an excellent choice for real estate investment. But there’s a whole lot more to this wonderful city. In this insider’s guide to Hoboken, you’ll learn why we love this city, and soon, you’ll love it too.

The Rich History Of Hoboken In Hudson County

The Lenape Native Americans inhabited Hoboken originally. The area was named “Hobocan” from the Delaware Indian term “Hopoghan Hackingh” (“Land of the Tobacco Pipe”) and it is known by a derivative of this name to this day.

In the 1600s the area was claimed by the Dutch, but was later sold to Peter Stuyvesant, and then again to Colonel John Stevens in 1784. And it was Colonel Stevens who played a crucial role in Hoboken’s planning and development.

He recognized its waterfront potential and initiated the first steam ferry service between Hoboken and Manhattan in 1811. This, and its central location along the Hudson River, turned Hoboken into a major public transportation hub.

By the mid-19th century, Hoboken had become a bustling industrial center and was officially incorporated as a city in 1855.

The Birthplace Of “Ol Blue Eyes” And Much More

The Hoboken waterfront became a key entry point for European immigrants. Francis Albert Sinatra, the son of two Italian immigrants, was born in Hoboken in December 1915 and later became the crooner known and loved as “‘ol Blue Eyes”—Frank Sinatra!

Although originally recorded by another artist, who can forget Sinatra’s version of New York, New York!  Hoboken residents were very proud of this famous connection, which is why various streets and parks have been named after him.

That’s not Hoboken’s only claim to fame, though.

As far back as 1641, Hoboken became the site of New Jersey’s first brewery, set up by a Dutch settler. In later years, the steady influx of German immigrants ensured that beer was brewed in Hoboken in great quantities.

Hoboken was the location of the first recorded game of baseball, in 1846. And the Stevens Institute of Technology, founded in Hoboken in 1870, is one of the oldest technological universities in the US. It was also the first college in the US dedicated solely to mechanical engineering.

Although used as a major embarkation point for US troops during the First World War, the city’s industrial base fell into decline during the post-war period. But by the late 20th century, revitalization efforts were underway.

Revitalization Efforts

Thanks to the gentrification of historic buildings and neighborhoods, new developments on the waterfront, and the construction of luxury apartments, Hoboken was completely transformed. It soon became both a desirable residential area and a thriving commercial district.

Located on the Hudson River Waterfront, it’s no surprise that the city was a busy industrial center for much of the 20th century.

For decades, the Maxwell House Coffee plant was Hoboken’s largest employer. The entire city woke up to the wonderful aroma of coffee! Wonder Bread, Twinkies, and Hostess cupcakes were also all baked in Hoboken. These are just a few of the famous brands to have called Hoboken home.
